What is acupuncture?

What is Acupuncture? Acupuncture is a safe, painless, effective form of medical treatment that promotes natural healing. This ancient healing art which uses needles to activate the qi in the body creates balance in the patient. Qi is the body’s life force or energy. The body is healthy when the qi is in balance. An individual may become ill when the qi is out of balance. This unbalanced state is often a result of stress, lack of exercise, overexertion, poor diet, accidents, and several other factors. Acupuncture places needles in specific locations on the body to help create balance and return the body to health.

Other modalities to Acupuncture

Acupuncture has other modalities to assist in improving ones health. These modalities include Tui Na massage, fire cupping, Gwa sha, electro acupuncture, and moxabustion.

Tui Na is a form of bodywork therapy developed in China over 2000 years ago. Tui na focuses on the energy or meridian system of the body to create a balance in the Qi or energy. Unlike acupuncture, Tui na does not use needles. The practitioner uses their hands with techniques such as brushing, kneading, rolling, pressing and rubbing to help increase the flow of Qi through the meridian system. Tui na is used to treat acute and chronic musculoskeletal conditions as well as non-musculoskeletal conditions.

Fire cupping is a method of applying heat to a cup and placing the cup on the skin to create a vacuum. In Traditional Chinese Medicine cupping is used to move stagnant energy. Cupping can be used for the treatment of respiratory diseases such as bronchitis, pneumonia and the common cold. Cupping is also used to treat musculoskeletal conditions involving the back, neck and shoulder region.

Gua sha is an ancient medical treatment using a round edged object with repeated strokes over an area of skin. The object is usually a Chinese soup spoon. It is pressed firmly next to the skin moving down the muscle. A patient may experience red dots from gua sha which usually fades in 2-4 days. Gua sha is used to treat fever, cough, bronchitis, asthma, muscle and tendon injury, headache, and stiffness.
